Episode 70: "Crying In The Chapel" (May 19th 1998 1.00pm)

Yaxley Farcett glanced over his shoulder as he walked down the aisle ofinside Ealham Cathedral the Cathedral towards Anne Worthington. He saw the young vicar shake his head and reach into his own pocket for some loose change which he threw into the collecting plate. Anne put down her basket of flowers and indicated to her colleagues that she was going to take a short break from her flower arranging duties.

Yaxley smiled at Anne and asked if there was anywhere private that they could chat. 'Let's go into the Peace Chapel' said Anne, and she lead Yaxley through a couple of archways and along a cold empty corridor to a small chapel which housed various memorials and memorabilia to the dead of numerous wars. They sat down side by side on a pew at the back and watched the flickering candles on the altar before speaking. Anne Worthington pulled a tissue from the sleeve of her cardigan and leaned forward with her eyes closed for a few seconds. Yaxley gazed round the walls, reading the names on the memorials. Even a casual look revealed the fact that the same local family names occurred over and over again in the different wars.

Eventually, Anne sat up and composed herself enough to turn and look at Farcett. 'Well Inspector. What can I do for you ? I didn't expect to see you here today'. Yaxley pursed his lips and hesitated for a second before he answered.'I've been to Reg Dixon's house' he said quietly, '.....and I read some of his E-Mails and some rather interesting entries in his diary'. He paused and waited for a reaction but Anne just gazed ahead, seemingly more interested in the flickering candles than what Farcett was saying.   'You weren't entirely frank with me yesterday, were you' he continued, 'I think your relationship was rather more than computer buddies'. Silence hung in the air as she continued to stare ahead until her eyes filled with tears which began to stream down her face as the events of the past two days finally caught up with her. She leaned forward and buried her face in her hands knocking a bible to the floor with an echoey thud. 'Mrs.Worthington' he continued firmly. 'This is extremely important. I need you to tell me the truth. I need to know what happened between the end of January when you made your discovery about Thompson's Wood and yesterday, when Reginald was murdered. Your relationship with him is your own business and I will protect your privacy totally, but you can't let any embarrassment on your part prevent you from telling me everything....and I mean everything'.

Anne wiped her eyes, blew her nose and composed herself again. She sat back and gazed up at the ornate ceiling while Yaxley waited for her to speak. After a few seconds she began. To Yaxley's ears it sounded like the voice of a woman who had been rehearsing the lines for some time, waiting for the right audience. It seemed that the time had arrived and he was the person that the words had been intended for.  'Forgive me if this sounds melodramatic' she began, '...but I still don't know how to come to terms with this. I still don't really understand what my feelings for Reggie were. All I do know is that I feel as though my heart has been ripped out and replaced with a brick.....and what saddens me as much as anything is that I know I would never, never feel this way if anything happened to my husband John. The man I married and the man I love'....she was quiet for a second and then added '..can you understand that Inspector ?'

Yaxley shook his head. There was no way he could put himself in the position of someone that had been married for nearly thirty years and had obviously been flattered by the attention that Dixon had paid her. He still was unsure as to what form their relationship had taken but it had had a devastating effect on the woman regardless of what amount of passion had passed between them. Yaxley decided to strike while the confessional iron was hot. 'Anne. Were you and Reg Dixon lovers ?'
