Episode 47: "Homeward Bound" - (May 19th 00:45)
Fred
Ricketts had been about half way through his Bull Shaving story when Yaxley
Farcett had given up his fight with consciousness. As Fred's words washed
over him, Farcett's head fell forward and he let sleep take him. He was just
beginning another of his recurring dreams where he could fly and at the point
where he was hovering above Barnham, looking down on Fred's caravan, the
sleeping pigs on the Railway line and the Skaters Run, he felt a hand slap
him, rather too hard, across the face. Yaxley's eyes sprang open and he was
greeted by the sight of Fred' huge face only inches from his own. 'C'mon
bor !
Yew can't sleep here. Yew've got to get this young gel hum. Shake yorself.
Yew've got a long walk, 'cos she can't drive now. I wouldn't hev given her
the whisky if I'd known she were driving'. Fiona Morgan stood up and held
out a hand for Yaxley Farcett. 'Fred's right Yax. C'mon. It'll only take
an hour to walk back up to the village. I'll come back and pick my car up
in the morning after breakfast'. Yaxley raised an expectant eyebrow at this
statement. Would this be the same 'brekfust' that Su Parsons had hinted at
earlier on, in the pub?
The young couple thanked Fred for his whisky, stories and hospitality and
left him and his dog to settle down for the night. They walked back along
the grass track and made their way back along Cauliflower Drove once more,
walking towards the bright full moon that illuminated the fields around them.
Their hands brushed against one another briefly as they both walked none
too steadily along the dead straight road. Yaxley grasped Fiona's hand more
firmly and their fingers entwined. He turned to Fiona and said, 'So, was
Fred right ? Have I got get this 'gal hum' ? Fiona smiled and replied, 'Only
if you want to walk me back to Ealham. The way we're staggering along I don't
think we'd make it. I told my house mate not to expect me back anyway. I
usually sleep at Mum and Dad's if I'm stuck'. Yaxley's mind ran through the
possibilities this threw up. Strangely enough, the thought of a twenty eight
year old stunner having to decide where to sleep the night had cut through
the fug of his mind magnificently.
'So' Yaxley enquired hesitantly, 'You can't get home. It doesn't matter if
you stay out all night and there's no one you need to ring or arrange anything
with'. Fiona nodded 'That just about sums it up Detective Farcett. Your deductive
powers are fully operational'. Yaxley then asked in a casual, 'can you pass
the salt ?' kind of way- 'Fancy crashing at mine then ?' Fiona laughed and
pulled his hand to stop him in the middle of the drove. The lights of the
signal box were blazing away a hundred yards further along as a freight train
thundered past carrying sand to Peterborough. She slowly put her arms around
his neck and pulled his head toward her own, so their noses were

almost
touching . 'You're the bold one aren't you ? What happened to the tongue
tied little boy from this morning ? You could hardly speak to me in 'Chips'.
Yaxley smiled shyly and rubbed his nose back and forth across Fiona's, eskimo
style. 'That'll be the healing power of Quangle Root Miss Morgan' he replied.
'I'll sleep on the couch and you can have the bed. It's only so you can protect
me from that Su Parson's, you understand. I'm an honourable servant of the
East Anglian Constabulary Drainage Board Police'. Fiona kissed him full on
the mouth and began to walk up the Drove on her own. Looking back over her
shoulder she shouted 'Well c'mon then. This gel wants to git hum !'
